Simple Decor and a New Addition to Our Family.

I made a few changes in the living room.
I shopped the house and pulled this simple vignette together.

This is the year of keeping things simple.

Another important change in the living room is the newest addition to our family.
He's a bit shy...

Meet Bobbi.
A baby parakeet; we're not sure if he's a boy or girl yet. For now we say he.

What a sweet little bird. I've enjoyed taking care of him.
Yes, I've been talking to a bird... and my plants... Don't judge :)

He loves to sit and look out the window.

At night he likes to sleep with his cage covered. When he's tired, he gets all puffed up and closes his eyes. I love pulling the blanket off of him in the morning... he's so happy to see me.

It's kind of like having a baby but NOT!

When he's not in front of the window, he sits right behind my chair. When we leave the house, which is not very often, we leave music on to keep him company. He's very smart and loves attention. He's quite the show-off!

He's fitting into our family perfectly and we're happy to have him. I'm surprised how little trouble he's been. We clean the cage once a week and vacuum stray bird seed up a few times a week. No big deal compared to how much we enjoy him. If you want to know more about how to care for parakeets, you can read about it here.

I guess it's time to get busy. I still have to pull the mantel together, decorate my chalkboard, and I have something new to show you. Hopefully, I'll share that with you next week.
I hope you were inspired!

Live Indoor Plants.

The sun is finally shining and I am finally motivated. This year I've decided that I want to bring the outdoors in. Living plants everywhere. Beautiful, green, living plants.
Here is my first project of the new year.

Greenery, rust, and metal make my heart skip a beat! There's just something about this combination that I really like.

I splurged and picked up 5 ivy "Spearpoint" plants and planted them in this old chicken feeder. I love ivy; it's so pretty, but I tend to kill it. I've never bought this kind, so I'm trying again...

It fits perfect here. I have visions of it just growing and growing cascading all down the pallet... *sigh*

I saw this pretty plant and had to have it. Lowes had it priced for $15; I made it to the register and then had my daughter take it back...I just couldn't spend that much on something that might die.  I went to Walmart and got the very same plant for $8. That's how you do it! It didn't have a tag, but I think the one at Lowes called it a fern, which makes sense, it looks like a fern.

I found this pedestel urn at a thrift store for $2.99. It's solid brass, made in India. A huge score! My new fern, who I call Fern, sits happily on my dining room table. My kids look at me funny when I talk to Fern... You'll be relieved to know that Fern doesn't talk back.

Do you check clearance for plants? Our Lowes has a place in the back of the garden center where they keep clearance plants. Some look rough, but most of them look good. I picked up this bamboo plant regularly priced for almost $11, and got it on clearance for $3.

It's supposedly a low maintenance plant. I stuck it in this thrifted basket and my daughter claimed it for her room.

I hope they live. I don't naturally have a green thumb, but I do have  a craving for greenery, so I'll pay close attention to them.  I'll let you know how it goes.
I hope you were inspired!

Vintage Ironing Board Vignette

Most of you know that I love thrift store shopping. My entire home is decorated with thrifted items. I am not ashamed.
I picked up this red bottle last week. Perfect for summer decor.

Recently, I found this wooden ironing board.
 Oh Happy Day!
I also picked up this metal basket for a dime. Yep, a dime.
The chicken crate belongs to my husband. And you know
what that means....What's his is mine.

The ironing board just does fit along this wall. I think that
it helps to ground the shelves.

I struggle with vignettes. Just the word itself intimidates.
Before blogging, I had never even heard of that word.
Seriously, I had to look it up when I first saw it...
Just between us, it's a little too fancy for my taste.

This is how I do it: I gather things together that have meaning
and speak to me. I've decided that vignettes don't have
to make sense to other people. As long as they make sense to me.
Whew! I'm so glad I figured that out.

This is the view from the kitchen.

This is the view from my chair where I'm blogging right now.
My living room is pretty big. This is one corner.
See that green stool. It's so cool. I picked it up for less than $5.00.
I wish I knew where it came from, who had it, and kept it in such great condition.
I think it might be from the 70's.

I have white slipcovers for my couch and love seat but they need to be ironed.... I keep putting it off. Although, I am looking forward to a lighter look for summer.
I want to add more red accents, maybe change up the pillows. I can't decide if I should paint the front door. So many decisions...

This afternoon I'm going to pick out my wood floor for this room.
(So excited except for the fact we are going to install it ourselves... )

A Valentine's Day Vignette

So I decided to decorate for Valentine's Day.
I've eaten my share of chocolate on this day, but I've never decorated. So this is a first for me and I have to say, I had fun with it. I promised myself that I wouldn't overthink things this coming up year. After all, you already know I'm going to change it up... for nothing stays the same around here.

How pretty is this?  When I started out, I had nothing red. Nothing but a red candle that I had left over from Christmas.

So, I went shopping and spent a whopping $3.00 at Dollar Tree.
I picked up a banner and 2 packs of red styrofoam hearts.

I made a runner out of some red checkered fabric that I found in my stash and layered a white scarf down the middle of that.

I shopped the house and found a few things.  I have plenty of white "stuff" so I decided to layer random things inside a dish. I do this a lot. I love grouping things together.

I used a necklace to dress up the red candle.
These kissing angels came from Goodwill.

This is one of my favorite birds. I call him grumpy bird. He has nothing to do with Valentine's Day, I just like him.

My kids bought me flowers for my birthday a few weeks ago.
I stuck a few in this mason jar. Simply pretty.

I made this wreath from several old Christmas wreaths. It reminds me of a boxwood wreath, I think it works anytime of year. I love the look of greenery on the black chalkboard.

I made this chalkboard out of an old painting. I flipped the painting over and applied about 3 coats of chalkboard paint. I painted the frame a glittery gold color. It's really pretty in person.

This is the first thing you see when you enter the dining room. It really makes a statement. I've been collecting white pitchers for a while now. You can never have too many white pitchers, right?
Almost everything you see here came from a thrift store.

Lets be honest here, this is what my Valentine's vignette looks like today. I'm just not a fan of busy color. I took down the banner and I took the red hearts off the wreath. I like the small pops of red with the mostly white decor.
Less color makes me happy.

So what do you like? Lots of color or not so much?
