Thrift Store Furniture Makeover

I have 4 children. My oldest son recently moved out. That resulted in 2 girls getting their own rooms! My youngest daughter is for the first time ever decorating her own room.
Oh happy day!

She needed some extra furniture. So her very thrifty mother found her a dressing table at Salvation Army for $14.00. It was a bit ugly. A very pale flesh colored, nail polished stained table... BUT it had potential. For the price... Great potential.

This table needed a chair. A cheap chair. I quickly found this chair for $4.99. Sturdy, a good size, it needed some paint and some minor alterations but, YES, this chair would work.

A cute couple don't you think.

My sweet husband took the handsaw and cut these pieces off of the chair. I will definitely be using those little legs on something else.

Now, for the makeover. I know I've shared this chalkpaint recipe before, but I am sharing it again. It's so easy and I hope those of you who haven't tried it WILL!
 1. 1 tablespoon of Unsanded grout. 2. Mix with 2 tablespoons of warm water. 3. Stir until the grout melts. 4. Pour into 1 cup of paint.
 5. Stir well. 6. It has a pudding like texture. Paint!

(Back to the story)

She wanted it yellow. Not just any yellow, but a yellow called Pale Banana. Let me tell you, there is nothing pale about this color! What's better than chalkpaint? Teaching my sweet daughter how to chalkpaint...

Here it is. With paint included, this was less than $25.00.
Have you looked at the price of new furniture lately?

She loves it. And because she painted a lot of it herself... she loves it even more. I put a coat of AS wax on it.

Check out this sticker chandelier. We found this at a discount store called Ollies. $3.99.

She needed an armoire for more storage. I had one. In the living room. I didn't love it...And you know what's next... I painted it!

So pretty! Paint made all the details of this piece stand out.

The hardware... I had no idea what to do. They were ugly. I didn't want them to stand out at all... I immediately emailed the Amazingly talented Suzan from Simply Vintagous and asked her what should I do.... and she immediately emailed me back and said chalkpaint right over them. Well, okay. I did.  And I love how it looks.

My daughter is precious! She has big dreams. She wants to travel. She's been working on this travel wall. We've been looking for things at thrift stores to fill it.

We found this cool framed map at the flea market for $2.00. We love that it has the names of who owned it before. It has pin marks everywhere these people traveled.. or hoped to travel. We will never know. But isn't it cool!

I hope you enjoyed the sneak peeks of my little girls room. It's still a work in progress. She's still discovering what kind of decor she likes. I love watching her make these decisions.
My little girl is happy with her new makeup table. Because she's her Momma's daughter, I'm sure it will be painted many times...

Thank you so much for stopping by Thrift My House!

  1. I love the makeup table! Amazing what paint can do and in such a pretty color, it's fantastic!

  2. It all turned out gorgeous! Very inspiring! I'm your newest follower.

  3. Hi Sherry, everything for your daughters room turned out gorgeous. Love the pretty yellow. I also have the chalk paint recipe just not used it yet. The tall chest painted white turned out great. Painting the hardware is something I always do on my painted pieces too. I sometimes go back and give them a little distress sanding for an aged look as well. Yours looks fabulous. I bet your daughter is so excited to have such a wonderful space.
Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.

  4. I love that yellow color!! Your girl has great taste already, this is evident. And she has wanderlust, how cool. Creative of you to just trim off the parts of the chair that made it to big. I'll be storing that trick away, for sure. I think it's awesome that you let her paint the piece herself, too. She's going to cherish that pretty little table and chair set for a looonng time!!

  5. Sherry, Great make overs. I love thrifting too. Blessings to all at your house, xoxo,Susie

  6. Holy geez.....I can't believe you got that vanity for 14 bucks! That's almost criminal. Very sly of you to pass on your talents to your daughter. That will leave more TV time for you. A great makeover and I must say you did an amazing job on the chair. Love the low back. Cheers. PS....That armoire is pretty sweet too.

  7. What a great find--both pieces turned out lovely! Bet your daughter is thrilled!

  8. Oh my Sherry what a great find and how fun is that color on her vanity. Glad your daughter could get in on the transformation too. Her room looks so adorable. Great job and super awesome make over for $25.

  9. Your daughter is darling, and how fun to watch her personality show up while decorating her own room! The vanity and chair are adorable, and the armoire is so fresh and bright, perfect piece for storage. Love the map wall!!

  10. Hi Sherry,
Great thrift store find and makeover. Love the color your daughter picked, such a happy color. Tell her she is very lucky to have her own room...I have two sisters and I didn't get my own room until one of them got married...the youngest one who I happen to share a room with...I was 22...Hee, Hee, Hee. Happy Weekend.

    Hugs and Kisses.

  11. You have been busy. I love the vanity and the armoire. I have a triple dresser that needs painting. Wanna come for a visit? Ha. Hopefully I shall get to it soon. Once they start moving out, it goes quick. Enjoy them!

  12. That vanity was an amazing deal Sherry, and I love the colour. It's so fresh and fun. It's amazing what a little paint can do for a piece. The armoire looks awesome in white. I love those funky shaped baskets beside it. I think it's great that your daughter gets to share in the decision making and painting. Such fun!

  13. Sherry the two of you have one a fantastic job! Good on her for getting painting and I live the banana colour.

  14. It looks wonderful and fresh and I love the fact that she's doing some of the work herself. :)

  15. The yellow is so cheerful and of course it will be even more special because she painted it herself. Love Suzan's idea to paint over the handles of the other piece. She's so smart! It's fun to see the cute things your daughter put on her new table. I like the sweet bear! Enjoy your weekend! Hugs!

  16. PS I raised four kids and it's a challenge. But guess what? Mine were ALL boys! No pretty girly stuff to decorate with back then! heehee! Hugs!

  17. Love it Sherry! I'm trying to add a little yellow to my kitchen and not having much luck. I love the fact that you are teaching your daughter to chalk paint. Way to train your future assistant! Love the way you cut that chair down to make it fit and of course....the prices were a steal for these. Don't you love Suzanne? She always knows what to do!

  18. Oh, your daughter's room is so sweet!! The desk, chair and armoire turned out amazing! :)

  19. What a steal! I really liked it before. LOVE IT NOW! I see that little girl is doing the work. How precious. My niece looks to do her own thing too. Just darling. What a transformation on the chest! You do girl! They are doing alot with yellow and gray now too.

  20. reader here! I discovered your blog through a comment you made on Suzan's blog. I liked the title of your blog and had to come check it out! I have been reading lots of your other posts and love your style. Seems we share a love of thrifting and from what I see, also a love of white dishes and pitchers. I love the vanity makeover too! I was given a vanity exactly like this one minus the mirror and had my hubby install two thrifted shelves to it and turned it into a sewing table. Mine is chalk painted white and I too make my own chalk paint. I'll be adding you to my sidebar and will be back to visit often! Come by and visit sometime!

    Blessings, Vicky

  24. What a great find! Every girl should have her own dressing table, right? I like how you modified that chair to allow it to work with that table. I wouldn't have thought of that.

  25. The dressing table looks adorable. Thanks for sharing your chalk paint recipe. I love your blog. I am a new follower.

  26. That armoire looks beautiful! Popped on over from Mellywood's mansion. Your bedroom furniture makeover is incredible too!

  27. Your daughter's room looks wonderful! I love that she did some of the work, and decorating herself. Great job!!
Your bedroom makeover is also beautiful!! What a difference from the original room. Blogging does have it's merits.
So glad you are happy with the results. It all looks gorgeous!!

  28. What an adorable room your daughter has. I can't believe that deal you got on that map. I'm in love! I also love how you were able to tweak the chair and scale it to fit with the vanity. You're brilliant!

  29. I love how her room turned out! And I laughed out loud at that first picture of that dressing table and the chair. I thought, "Wow...she's gonna need some really skinny legs to sit there!!" =D Everything turned out great!

  30. I'm in love with your daughter's room. I love the painted furniture. Yellow is my favorite color!! So sweet that she helped you with the painting projects and I love, love, love the meaning behind her gallery wall. I hope one day she gets to visit all the places she's ever dreamed of. Have a lovely weekend, my friend.

  31. Wow - what great bones, and I love that it was a family affair making this dressing table work for your daughter's room! I'd love to feature you tonight at Revisionary Life Thrifty Life Thursday...

  32. Hey pretty lady!! I saw one of your comments on another blog and thought, Whoa! When have I last been to visit you? Sure enough, I fell off your blog roll. How or why, I don't know. Anyway, I;m following again.

What a cool desk and chair! I wish I could find stuff like that around here. You guys did a great job...I love that color and your daughter is such a cutie!! The armoire looks fantastic white. Hardware is always iffy. The old stuff is nice...not so much the newer. I like your daughter's travel wall. Maybe she can print out some flags of the countries she wants to visit and make a collage?

Hope all is well with you. I miss you!!!

    Sending a hug!

    Jane xx
