Live Indoor Plants.

The sun is finally shining and I am finally motivated. This year I've decided that I want to bring the outdoors in. Living plants everywhere. Beautiful, green, living plants.
Here is my first project of the new year.

Greenery, rust, and metal make my heart skip a beat! There's just something about this combination that I really like.

I splurged and picked up 5 ivy "Spearpoint" plants and planted them in this old chicken feeder. I love ivy; it's so pretty, but I tend to kill it. I've never bought this kind, so I'm trying again...

It fits perfect here. I have visions of it just growing and growing cascading all down the pallet... *sigh*

I saw this pretty plant and had to have it. Lowes had it priced for $15; I made it to the register and then had my daughter take it back...I just couldn't spend that much on something that might die.  I went to Walmart and got the very same plant for $8. That's how you do it! It didn't have a tag, but I think the one at Lowes called it a fern, which makes sense, it looks like a fern.

I found this pedestel urn at a thrift store for $2.99. It's solid brass, made in India. A huge score! My new fern, who I call Fern, sits happily on my dining room table. My kids look at me funny when I talk to Fern... You'll be relieved to know that Fern doesn't talk back.

Do you check clearance for plants? Our Lowes has a place in the back of the garden center where they keep clearance plants. Some look rough, but most of them look good. I picked up this bamboo plant regularly priced for almost $11, and got it on clearance for $3.

It's supposedly a low maintenance plant. I stuck it in this thrifted basket and my daughter claimed it for her room.

I hope they live. I don't naturally have a green thumb, but I do have  a craving for greenery, so I'll pay close attention to them.  I'll let you know how it goes.
I hope you were inspired!
Thank you for stopping by Thrift My House.

  1. I love your new pops of green, Sherry. I can kill a real plant in a heartbeat but currently, I do have a few "live" ones at home. In my office at work, it looks like a green house...the lighting is so much better there. I love seeing ivy and a fern anywhere and yours look great in there new homes. Good luck with them!

  3. I love houseplants but have limited sunlight available. I have a peace plants I've kept alive for years and years and just added some ivy since it grows so well and needs minimal light.

  5. Nothing can compete with fresh greenery in a room. Love your ivy in the chicken feeder. Whenever I try ivy inside, it eventually is covered in mites...don't know what I do wrong. Ivy is my favorite indoor plant.

  7. The English Ivy looks lovely in the chicken feeder! The second plant is a Boston Fern. What you must know about ferns are that they love humidity. So you might stick them in the bathtub (since it's winter) and let some water spray down on them. I've never had the bamboo plant, but it looks like a winner to me!

  9. What a lovely time of year to bring the outdoors in and great prices on the plants. I loved the way you planted up the chicken feeder, it really does make a great statement.

  10. Hi Sherry, I love what you have done here. They say that having greenery in your home helps with your outlook on life, it is suppose to create calmness. I tell people that if they see an indoor plant in my house and it's green, it is also silk, LOL I do well with outdoor plants, but have never had luck with growing plants indoors. I have been thinking about getting an Africa violet for the kitchen window . . . but like you said, I hate to think of killing it. I love the bamboo . . . you say . . . low maintenance . . . I wonder if I could keep it alive. I'll wait and see how it goes for you :)
    Have a lovely day!

  12. Looks great! I have had some success with certain plants over the years. I have one in my kitchen I've had for several years. It doesn't really grow much but it has stayed pretty and green and that's all I care about. I was just eyeing some indoor plants at Lowe's last night when we were picking up bathroom remodel stuff. I am so ready to be finished with that project. :) Have a great evening!

  13. I love your fern in the urn!! My ferns are still alive from last summer. Woo hoo!

  14. Love your fern and the urn is gorgeous. My ferns outside are still going strong since last spring. We've had mild weather so I'm hoping it will make it through the next few months. Love the ivy you have. It will be beautiful cascading down the palette.
    Have a great week. xo

  15. I love your rusty, crusty and all the other stuff you have so purposely placed through out your place. I love the green too, but did not inherit my mom's green thumb. One time, I had peace lilies and they grew. Maybe I'll invest in those. Right now, I have an artifical fern that I paid $5 for. It perfect on my plant stand.

  17. I love your plants & also the how you "repotted" them! Real greenery is always so pretty.
I have only one living plant in my house & luckily, it's survived for quite a few years. (I hope I didn't hex it now!)

  19. Good luck with your plants, Sherry! I check Lowe's and Home Depot for discounted plants. Got a poinsettia for $1 right before Christmas. Not a thing wrong with it, just end of season. My mother-in-law does that all the time and has pretty much landscaped her yard that way.

  20. I like it. I love plants. I was blessed with some from a friend who left the USA for full time missions. She was cleaning out her house and she had several beautiful house plants. I am happy to say after a year and half, they are all doing well. :-))
    Hope yours do well too.
    Have a great week,

  21. Thank you for these indoor plant ideas. I've been wanting to grow something indoors, but wasn't thrilled with the spider plant idea (arachnophobia- even of the plant, lol) Anyway I love all of your choices and the thrifty way you have replanted them. Perfect inspiration for this cold time of year!

  22. I'm wishing you luck with your plants. I always want plants but somehow, they just don't last very long around me. I think I Over Love them, you know, like I love them to death! Anyway, you found so real bargains and I hope they do well for you because they sure are pretty! Blessings, Cindy

  24. The greenery you have added looks fantastic. I would love to use my old chicken feeder for some plants but I am afraid I would get buried trying to find them in the snow drifts. I will have to pin this for next year! A great idea Sherry!!

  25. I can grow ivy outside like crazy. Inside, not so much. I have had luck with ferns though. Spray it with the nozzle on the kitchen faucet instead of watering.
I hope they live. Real greenery is wonderful. I love how you've styled them.

  27. Oh Sherry, your plants are so lush and pretty! You know, I went through a phase where I had all kinds of plants in my home - I couldn't get enough of them. But then...I killed them...unintentionally, of course :) I simply don't have a green thumb.

Enjoy, my friend. They look gorgeous in your home. Thanks for sharing with Roses of Inspiration. Hugs!

  28. I love all of your pretty live plants! I've heard that they're good for the air quality in your house too. I don't have any more live plants in my home because they all died. I mostly have fake ones and I'll probably just keep it that way. Yours are so pretty though. It's hard to duplicate the look of a real plant. Enjoy!

  29. Sherry, thanks for the inspiration. In winter, I love blurring the line between outdoors and indoors with plants. I just love the urn you found at the thrift store.

  33. I love greenery throughout the house.. I am going to use more through my home this year too. Especially this Winter! I had lots of ferns during the Summer.. When I bring them in they tend to shed so badly so I just let die out. I am excited to visit with you and am following along. Come on by and visit! Blessings!

  34. I love green plants in the house, especially during the winter months. Unfortunately, I have a brown thumb and kill everything I touch. Even those plants that everyone says are impossible to kill...let them spend a week with me. They will endure a slow, painful death! Gorgeous plants and look so pretty inside!! Love the containers! Hugs!

  36. I have this fern and it is wonderful and really hardy. I usually get mine in the summer and bring them inside in the winter. Some years they thrive, others not so much but it's all about how much I keep up with it. I can say for sure this fern will take a good bit of abuse. LOL! I really love the urn you used and the ivy as well! Loving your pretty greenery!

  45. I check clearance racks wherever I go! I love houseplants and have an old stereo cabinet full of them. Hubby likes his parents old cabinet and we don't use it so it's perfect as a plant stand. I bring plants in for the winter also but it's hard b/c we don't have the space for them. Green plants add so much to your home, yours look great.

  47. What is it about greenery, rust and metal?

I love using rusty old buckets for my plants.

Good Luck with your bamboo and thanks for Sharing Your Cup!

  48. Oh I LOVE what you are doing with your greenery! I love green plants inside too. Good luck with them... if they don't look happy in one place, try moving them around. They tend to need light, but not too much. And not much watering either... they do better slightly dry rather than too moist. Have fun with them! I love the look of the ivy in the chicken feeder, just perfect! Have a blessed day :)

  49. I love your new plants! I have plants all over my home and they make me smile! It's great to have some greenery around you in the winter months....keeps you going until spring! If you don't have lock with the ivy and the fern (they both hate me!) you may try a pathos. Easy peasy plant!
