Laundry Room Reveal and a Washer-Dryer Review.

Welcome to my Laundry Room.
I should say, welcome to the rest of my laundry room.

First of all, let me tell you why it's taken me 7 months to complete my laundry room makeover.

Last summer, I started making changes to my laundry room. My motivation was, we were about to get a new washer and dryer.

I was in organizational mode.  I added all sorts of baskets to my cabinets for storage (you can see that here), and then I decided to get rid of the popcorn ceiling. One thing always leads to another.

July 4th weekend, I sprayed, scraped, sanded (and sanded some more) and then painted the ceiling. What a mess! But I did it! And a few days later, the pain started... in my chest. Not heart pain, but a rib... hurt when you breathe, roll over in the bed, turn your head ... kind of awful pain!

I knew it had to do with the ceiling project I had just finished, so I did what everyone else does... I googled.

And I found out it was Costochondritis.

Here we are 7 months later and I'm finally pain free.
Was it worth it? I hate popcorn ceiling and I'm about to remove some from another bathroom next week. But this time, I'll work smarter, not harder... my husband's going to help.

                        Before                                          After

Now, come on in!

I made the laundry sign on an old board. I like how the sign "decorates" the shelf without taking up any room.

I painted the walls my favorite gray.
Woodlawn Colonial Gray by Valspar. This gray is beautiful with browns, especially the burlapy colors. I splurged a little on the curtains; they're from Target. The name is Tan Basketweave. I like long curtains in the laundry room. I always have.

Circling around, my Camellia bush sits just outside the window.

I picked up these shutters from Habitat for $2.00 a set.
Remember the little wooden vases from a previous project I did back during Christmas? Here
I painted and attached them to the shutters and added this greenery.

I first painted the shutters black but didn't like how they looked in the room. Then I painted them white and they took on a life of their own.... I LOVE it! The peeling, the cracking... the chippy look was a nice surprise! These were shiny, white, new looking shutters, but not anymore.

I picked the little shelf and basket up at Goodwill.

I love the non color here.

There's a little wall between the toilet and the sink.

I use this sink to wash out my brushes and paint tray. I try to keep the decor simple so that I have plenty of room.

I still have this shoe bag on the back of the door containing cleaning supplies.

I have a roll out clothes hamper; it has 2 compartments. I keep extra hangers on one side. The counter holds my baskets and laundry detergent, etc. The two drawers hold manuals to everything we've ever owned. I keep my mops, etc. in the crack between the hamper and the washing machine.

This is where it all started. I LOVE my basket storage system. It works! It helps me find stuff quickly and put away stuff quickly.

After reading tons of reviews, looking in all the local stores, we decided to purchase the Speed Queen washer and dryer set. I knew I wanted "old school." When I mentioned looking a new washer and dryer in a blog post, several people mentioned Speed Queen. I'd never heard of them before. My friend, Andi, from Delusions of Ingenuity, was a big help. She sent me pictures, info, and her review of the pair. The online reviews were very positive compared to the latest and greatest newfangled sets.

I've had them 6 months now and we love them.
They're both stainless steel on the inside, they wash and dry fast, and the lint trap is in the door, NOT on the top. I even washed my king sized quilt in the washer, and it did fine.
So yes! I recommend Speed Queen.

I tell ya, I'm loving the grays, whites, and browns lately!

So what do you think? Do you have any major projects going on? Have you ever stopped in the middle of a project because you hurt yourself?
I hope you were inspired!
Thank you for stopping by Thrift My House.

  1. Your laundry room looks fantastic, Sherry! You did a wonderful job! I can't imagine all the work you must have put in to get that ceiling down. I'm sorry you had to suffer for it, but your hard work paid off. Love your shutter decor!

  3. It is gorgeous, I only have a closet that my washer and dryer fit in, I would love a whole room! Love all your little details... take it easy on that next ceiling, I would be too nervous to do another after having such a long time healing from the last one

  4. This year, we may move the fridge out of my laundry room, so MAYBE I will make it more my own after that! I have some great inspiration now!

  5. I love how your organization is always so pretty Sherry, and you're a genius at vignettes. That little bird in the chicken wire cloche makes me smile. Those chippy shutters are perfection. Did they get that way by accident when you put on the white coat? I googled that word and it sounds painful. Glad that you're finally pain free. Removing popcorn ceilings can be such a big chore, but they do look so much nicer when done.

  6. I have laundry room envy - I do laundry in a corner of the garage.

I might have to make a LAUNDRY sign like yours.

  7. I love your laundry room! I am in the research stage of replacing my washer and dryer and your Speed Queen set looks exactly like what I am looking for. I love the grey walls, basket shelves and white shutters - well, I love everything. Beautiful job - so sorry about your injury and yes, I am constantly hurting myself by overdoing it. The ceiling turned out great.

  8. Hi Sherry, what a wonderful laundry and I am inspired by every thing you had done even though I already did mine a couple years ago. However, I will remember about the speed Queen set because I have the Kenmore elite (he-top load) and I am not a fan. As soon as this set goes, it's outta here.
Anyway, I love your long curtains too and I also am loving the neutrals with greys, browns and whites. I have a guest room with those colors. I adore your large laundry sign on the shelf. Your ceiling is gorgeous too and I know it was a big job.
So glad your ribs are better. I have that very same thing still and it's been on going since I had the flu in 2013 and coughed so much I injured my ribs on the left side front. It really takes a long time to heal as you know. My only projects left for now are to paint closets and that should do it for awhile. LOL Except the decorating changes that I am always doing. LOL
Have a great rest of the week.
    Hugs, CM

  9. Love it! I think your laundry room post was on of the first I read. I seriously love all of your projects and decor! Such a pretty room. I might actually enjoy doing laundry in there. I will have to remember the Speed Queen brand when I start looking for a new set. I have been debating on buying front loads but get mixed reviews. They are so costly too! My old set it still working and hoepfully they will for a while longer. Have a blessed Thursday!

  11. I am so glad you have finally recovered, but feel for you that you had to go through that. I have so many pains from all the lugging and work in our basement, maybe I have something too. I'm so loving your laundry area. The grays, the tans, the browns, the whites, it all goes so well together and gives such a calming feel. Your storage baskets are my favorite!! And thanks for mentioning the paint color, i need a good gray. Now you can enjoy, congrats xo Amy

  12. I like the non-color, too. It looks fresh and crisp, like just washed laundry coming in from the clothesline. The second thing I love is the Camellia bush outside the window. What could be more perfect? ~Ginene

  13. Sherry, it looks GREAT! I will be doing my laundry room because the bathroom above had to have the floors ripped out which led to issues below. So it'll be a two-fer. Love your basket system!!

  19. I love your pretty laundry room! I'm so jealous. I wish mine was photo worthy. Mine is more of a walk in closet really and isn't decorated at all. I love the grey color on the walls and how organized it is. the shoe bag makes a great cleaner organizer! Sorry to hear that you hurt yourself during this reno. I have arthritis issues so I run into "itis" problems many times a year for no reason. I can sympathize with your pain. glad you are better now.

  23. I gotta tell ya, Sherry...you've made me even more dissatisfied with the state of my laundry room in the Little Shack. It is one of the undone areas in the house. It is functional, but that's about it. Very unfinished and ugly. One of the projects we hope to get done this summer. I'm going to looking back at this post for inspiration and ideas. On the plus side, living in our RV for the past 4 months has made me appreciate having a washer and dryer in any kind of laundry room! -Sue

  31. I love it. In fact.. I am moving in just to do laundry. The laundry room is on my list... at the very bottom. It is in the gritty gross basement so I'm saving that job for warmer weather. (that's my excuse)
    You do amazing work.
    have a great day
