Thrift Store Bench Makeover

The cheapest piece of furniture I've ever bought.

I picked up this bench for $1.50 at Salvation Army.

You would have thought I had won the lottery...

I painted it white and I stenciled a song lyric my husband sometimes sings to me.

It's a song by Randy Travis, released the year we were married. 1987.

I wonder whatever happened to him?

There's a lot of room underneath the bench. Perfect for extra storage.

I placed it at the end of my bed.

And it probably won't stay there forever and ever (or even a week) .... Amen.
So what's the last "cheap" thing that made you do the happy dance?  or is it just me ....

  1. Your bench is so neat and personal. I can't believe you got it for $1.50! It was such a great idea to stencil your special song lyric on there.

You know Randy Travis had a stroke last year. He lives somewhere here in the Dallas area....I think.

  4. Hi Sherry, What a great find and a fabulous price. Love how you designed with it. So wonderful at the end of the bed and great storage underneath. I would be doing the happy dance too with this one. Great job. I guess my last great find at a great price was a night stand I am currently working on. I did a happy dance with that piece too. Love the song lyric. I heard RT has been very sick and not singing currently.

    Thanks for sharing your treasure.

  5. This is too cute, Sherry!! It's so sweet that your hubby sings that song to you! I haven't been out to a good sale in a long time and this is the time of year I actually have time to do stuff!!

Thanks for popping in. Actually, we had the old carpet replaced with new stuff. Our whole house is hardwood floors except the office and family room, as they sit over the crawl space instead of basement and the floors get super cold in the winter. The carpet and padding keeps the room insulated. Sort of nice to have it underfoot...I'm loving it!

  10. Oh my gosh! I am totally stealing this idea....using those song lyrics on something. That was my wedding song (for our little countyr wedding) back in 1988! Every time I hear it, it takes me back...:) I can sing every word, even if it has been 5 years since I heard it love it stenciled on the bench. I'm trying to figure out if I have anything in my stash to stencil it on. Thanks for the idea!

    Blessings, Vicky

  14. Wow - that is a great bench. LOVE the make-over you did on it. I like narrow benches-you can put them just about anywhere.

The last cheap thing I found? And old drop front desk that I STILL have to get painted. One more project!!! xo Diana

  18. Lately, all my decorating and projects have been "use what you have" so they all made me do the "Happy Dance" ... old bottles gathered together ... vignettes of mismatched items ... BOO banner made from some old dropcloth fabric.

    LOVE your bench!

  21. What a deal. It looks like it is in great shape! ! I remember that song and love it too. The wording looks especially cool on the bench, Sherry. I just garbaged picked an odd table that will work perfectly between my washer and dryer with a wee bit of adjusting. I was going to have to make one so I was thrilled to see this thing on someone's curb! Love your new bench!!

  23. I love what you did with your thrift store find. Looks amazing. So I was reading along and I read "I wonder what ever happened to him" I thought you were talking about your hubby....first thought that goes through my mind was, you couldn't hide the body in the bench, you had already put your treasures under there....hmmmmm Now I realize you were talking about good ole Randy....duh Cheers.

  31. For ever and ever (or a week)...hehehehe... I did just pick up a gorgeous antique mission-style rocker from a friend of mine. She only wanted $15 for it, but it was her lucky day...I only had a $20 in my wallet, so that's what she got! I guess that's not CHEAP cheap, but for that chair it was!!
