2014 Bedroom Reveal

2014 Bedroom Reveal
Okay, so I've been working on this since 2013 but who
has to know? This post has tons of photos so pull up a chair
and stay a while.

It all started with paint. Don't it always... 2 years ago I decided to paint my bedroom suite. In the moment, I didn't think about it... I just did it! I mixed up some white chalk paint, held my breath and started painting.

That 80's oak furniture didn't stand a chance... the more I painted, the more I loved it. And to this day, it's the best decision I ever made. My advice... if you don't like it, PAINT it!

This was how my bedroom looked before my latest makeover. I had a black, white and tan color scheme. I liked it for a while... but I really missed color. I just need a little and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to add color to this and it look right.

Here we go!
I stripped everything down to nothing and started over... Starting with the walls. I painted them Valspar Woodlawn Sterling Blue.
It's a light blue with gray undertones. I really like it.

And for Christmas, I bought myself this bedspread.
It's from J.C. Penny. It's a king size  Royal Velvet Ogee bedspread. It's huge. I finally found a bedspread that goes to the floor on both sides of my bed. LOVE it!

Here is my new Blue, white and green bedroom.
I kept it light and airy. I painted everything that was black (hardware and lamps) Rustoleum Brushed Nickel and other things I painted white. I added some green accents with the lamp shades and bedding.

Side table decor.

I don't have enough room for a table along the wall beside my bed and I have this thing about pictures hanging with nothing underneath. That bothers me. These shutters work perfectly to ground the chicken wire frame that holds all of my cards and photos.

There is a huge oak tree just outside my window. Pretty view.

My father in law made this bench at the end of my bed when we first got married. It used to sit on the back porch but I painted it up and now it sits here with shoes stored inside.

I also have this thing about balance... I tend to try and do the same kinds of things on both sides of something. Am I the only one?

You can never have too many baskets. I am a baskaholic.

See how narrow this bookcase is... I'm always on the hunt for narrow furniture. This is a long wall with not a lot of floor space so this worked perfectly by the door.

I picked this up at a local junk store. It was NASTY! I think cats may have peed on it. Yeah, gross! But let me tell you... Chalk Paint to the rescue! It painted up beautifully and it no longer smells bad. Oh and I only paid $15.00 for it.
Don't you like the open slats in the back.

Look at it now! Do you guys know Mary Alice over at Chateau Chic? She has the most awesome blog and if you need inspiration on how to display things... go follow her!
Great inspiration! When I was styling this I kept asking myself..
what would Mary Alice do... haha!

When in doubt, I always add a chalkboard. And I have many! I like the simplicity of them.

Okay guys... this was 5 years ago... before blogging...
I don't even know....

Much better wouldn't you say?
Honestly, all of you are my inspiration. I've learned so much over the last couple of years and you've all helped and encouraged me to try new things, do it myself and find my style!

Thank you so much for stopping by Thrift My House!

  2. Oh my goodness! Yes, love, love, love! That I would love. My room is much smaller and could not hold all of that. The bed is iron and I don't know how I can paint it without taking it apart and Mr. H is not one to help with this kind of thing. I love the way you have the sheet music placed behind your collectibles. My daughter and her husband have the colors of blue and green in her bedroom. It makes me think of the beach. You room actually resembles some of my favorite Pinterest Rooms. Can I add to my Pinterest Board? Love the transformation. Thank you so much for posting.

  4. Your room is beautiful. I especially like the bedspread. Don't you love how a bedspread just pulls everything together vs. a comforter that takes so many pieces/parts? Everything looks great with the paint color on the walls and all the white paint on the furniture. Wish I could be brave enough to paint our furniture.

  5. Sherry that is one fabulous bedroom! How could a day be bad when you wake up with all that bright cheeriness? I loved your black and white, which was the inspiration for my bedroom makeover, but this one seems even lighter and more chic. Your shelf is so pretty and I'm going to check out that blog!

  6. It looks GREAT! I love that you create balance...I learned in grad school that humans naturally want symmetry. At least that's what the prof said. Well done!

  14. Hi Sherry, LOVE it!! What a grand makeover. Yes, we have a lot in common. Swinging paint brushes has touched just about everything in my house at least once or twice. Love your painted headboard and side tables. Your whole room is stunning and magazine worthy. Love the fresh and airy colors with your accents too.
I am about to start my kitchen cabinets. The last of the cabinets to paint in my house.
Thank you for sharing. Your redo turned out stunning!

  17. I love your new bedroom! You did such a good job making it airy and bright. It's perfect for summer too. I bet it's a lot easier to make up your bed with a bedspread too. Glad that you found one to fit your bed. I like the subtle touch of blue and green you added to go with the white. I couldn't agree more with you about using paint to transform things. It is so simple but makes a huge impact!

  20. Your bedroom is like a retreat! So pretty! I love all your white furniture. What a difference a little bit of elbow grease and paint can make. Good job. Reading this made me want to have a nap in your bedroom, so if you see a lump in your bed, you know I've stopped by! I can hardly wait until I wake up for dinner (hehe) and see that oak tree out the window.

  21. Beautiful!!!! And there's nothing better than painting 80s oak furniture. But, if you're not careful, you may find yourself outside painting that oak tree. =D

  22. It is gorgeous! And you didn't have to invest a fortune... Again, in MY house, painting wood is a big no-no! Especially 'new' wood... If I found a bedroom set that was old and dinged up, maybe... Hugs!
