I really do Thrift My House. I love a bargain. From furniture, to clothing, to groceries... I'm always looking to save money.
I was at Salvation Army a few weeks ago and saw this coffee table for $12.99. I couldn't get to the register fast enough. Do you see what I see? A farmhouse coffee table! For $12.99!
I sanded the top so it would soak up some stain. You can see the particle board showing through in a few places... no worries.
I first stained it a dark brown. It looked pretty BAD... the color was very uneven. I then stained it ebony wiping off some of the stain so the brown would shine through. I brushed on a couple of coats of water based poly. Perfect! Perfectly Imperfect!
I love the size of this table with the couch.
I primed and painted the sides and legs. Lately I've been using primer, latex paint and poly instead of chalk paint. Can you believe it? With kids, this table will get a lot of wear and tear.
I don't want to baby it at all.
I distressed it just a little.
I noticed that when I distressed it, the paint wanted to roll a bit compared to chalkpaint but it still looked good to me.

After
I hope you were inspired!
Thank you so much for stopping by Thrift My House.

Wow! That is some transformation! You turned that ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Love it, Sherry!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great score you savvy lady. But you really impress me with how you changed it up. I know so little about staining furniture and this is something I'd really love to do with an oak table we have in our family room. A stained top and pained bottom. Could you have used the ebony first or did you get the effect you wanted by using the brown first? This looks fantastic in your room! :)

I love that table! You did a great job -- it turned out gorgeous!!! I would have ran all the way to the register also. The darker top looks great with the white paint! I see your little bunny under the table. I keep one out all year long and just give him a little bit different look for the seasons. Hope you have a great weekend! I may come get that table when you aren't looking! ;-)

ReplyDeleteSherry,
ReplyDeletewhat a great transformation! Love the stained top and paint on the bottom. I'm in the process of doing that to a dresser with a great shape (from a yard sale), to use in my family room. I just found your blog and have enjoyed browsing thru! Most of my things are from yard sales or thrift stores, love getting a great price on something that I know will be fabulous after a little work! I'm your newest follower, would love for you to visit me!

It is now a beautiful coffee table! I would love to learn how to paint and re-do furniture, someday I will! Wishing you a lovely Autumn!

ReplyDeleteI recently did a table with primer and paint as well as I don't think chalk paint makes sense if you ever need to clean or wipe down the item. Has anyone found a technique using primer first to be able to age it without it rolling up..it did same with me by the time I had the coats on..I'd planned for a weathered look and wasn't able to accomplish it because too think I believe.. suggestions?
